SOILRES

Portuguese National Task Force holds its first meeting with focus on regenerative agriculture

The SOILRES project held the first meeting of its Portuguese National Task Force (NTF) at Quinta da Cholda, Azinhaga, on 9 April 2026. The meeting brought together 35 stakeholders from across the agricultural sector to discuss soil health, regenerative farming practices, and climate resilience.

This event marked the official launch of the Portuguese NTF, a collaborative platform designed to connect farmers, advisors, researchers, public institutions, and private-sector representatives. Through dialogue and knowledge exchange, the NTF aims to ensure that SOILRES solutions are scientifically robust, economically viable, and relevant to the needs of Portuguese local agriculture.

A key focus of the meeting was the presentation of ongoing SOILRES field trials at Quinta da Cholda. These trials explore innovative approaches to grain maize production, including the use of cover crops, biostimulants, and technology-based solutions to improve soil health and crop resilience.

Identifying challenges and opportunities

Participants took part in interactive working sessions to analyse the diversity of maize production systems in Portugal and identify the main challenges facing the sector. Discussions highlighted issues such as water management, demographic changes in rural areas, farm sustainability, and the integration of livestock-derived resources into crop production.

Stakeholders also carried out a SWOT analysis of the solutions being tested within the project. Cover crops, biostimulants, and digital technologies were widely recognised for their potential to improve soil quality and support more sustainable farming systems. However, participants also pointed to barriers including high implementation costs, limited technical support, and uncertainty surrounding future policy frameworks.

The meeting concluded with a field demonstration, where attendees observed machinery used for cover crop management and the application of biostimulants. The practical session generated lively discussion and provided valuable opportunities to exchange experiences and technical knowledge.

Key messages for the future

One of the strongest messages emerging from the event was the need for greater support to help farmers transition towards regenerative agricultural practices. Participants highlighted the importance of dedicated financial incentives, stronger policy frameworks, increased technical training, and more on-farm demonstrations to facilitate adoption.

The insights gathered during this first Portuguese NTF meeting will help shape the next stages of the SOILRES project and ensure that future activities address the real needs and priorities of the agricultural community.

The Portuguese National Task Force will continue its work throughout the project, fostering collaboration and contributing to the development of resilient and sustainable farming systems across Portugal.
