Healthy Soils, Healthy Cities: SOILRES invites you to play on World Soil Day 2025

World Soil Day is marked every 5 December to highlight how vital soil is for food, water, climate, and nature. In 2025, the theme “Healthy soils for healthy cities” recognises that the ground under our streets, parks, and gardens is as important as the fields that grow our food, because urban soils store water, cool the air, and support green spaces that improve health and well‑being.

When soil in cities is left open and covered with plants, it acts like a sponge and filter, soaking up rainwater, reducing floods, storing carbon, and supporting trees, gardens, and urban farms. Urbanisation, however, often seals soil with asphalt and concrete so it can no longer absorb water or support deep roots, which worsens heat, runoff, and pollution.

World Soil Day 2025 calls on city leaders and citizens to reduce soil sealing and restore soil wherever possible, for example through parks, rain gardens, tree pits, green roofs, and community gardens, making healthy urban soils a core nature‑based solution for resilient, climate‑ready cities.

How SOILRES connects fields and cities

SOILRES is a European research project that works with farmers, scientists, and other experts to restore soil health and make crops more resilient to climate extremes. The project focuses on biodiversity‑based practices such as cover crops, compost, reduced tillage, and maintaining living roots that keep soils structured, cool, and full of life.

Stronger, healthier soils in agricultural areas around cities provide more stable harvests, better water storage, and less nutrient loss, which supports regional food security and cleaner rivers that also flow through urban areas. The same principles that SOILRES tests on farms (keeping soil covered, minimising disturbance, feeding it with organic matter, and supporting diverse plants) are also the principles that make urban green spaces work better for people and nature.

For World Soil Day 2025, SOILRES chose a playful way to share these ideas: by inviting everyone to learn about soil through online games.

Playing for soil: online games that explain it all

Online games turn complex ideas like infiltration, erosion, and biodiversity into simple decisions and instant visual feedback that children, students, and adults can easily understand. Games are also a good bridge between rural and urban perspectives, because they can show how the same soil rules apply both in a farm field and under a city park.

Here are some free online games and activities that SOILRES recommends for World Soil Day 2025:

Soils 4 Kids – Play Soil games
Soils 4 Kids offers several browser‑based games where players build soil profiles, balance sand, silt, and clay, and learn why soil needs pores for water and air.
Games like “Soil Tris” and “A‑Maze‑ing Underground” help explain how soil texture, structure, and nutrients influence plant growth.

Science Trek – Soil Games
Science Trek’s soil games let players go “underground,” explore the world beneath their feet, and meet soil organisms while solving puzzles.
Titles such as “The World Beneath Your Feet,” “Soiled Again!” and “Can You Dig It?” are well suited for classroom use and home play.

ESL Games Plus – Types of Soil game
This interactive quiz game helps learners distinguish between different soil types and their properties in a playful way.

Agronomy for Me – Fun and Games list
A gateway page that points to Soils 4 Kids, My American Farm soil‑related games, and more resources for younger learners.

SOILRES invites teachers, students, families, and soil enthusiasts to mark World Soil Day 2025 by playing these games.
